Watch Glossary
Alarm:
A notification that is made by sound, at a set point or time.
Analog watch:
A timepiece with a dial that has a marker at every hour. (12 hours)
Automatic Movement:
A mechanically operated timepiece that works on motion.
Bangle Bracelet:
Style of bracelet found on certain ladies watches that are fixed in size.
Battery:
A device that converts energy into electricity. Used for all quartz movements.
Bezel:
Part of the watch that surrounds the crystal or dial. There are a few different
Style bezels. One, fixed style which is stationary and doesn't move.
Second, Bi-directional which can be turned two ways. Finally, a unidirectional
Which rotates anti-close wise.
Bracelet:
A bracelet that is constructed by links. Can be made from stainless, sterling silver, gold or platinum.
Buckle:
Part of the strap that connects the two ends of each side of the case.
Calendar:
A feature that displays the date and sometimes the day of the week. There are numerous types of calendar watches.
Case:
The metal housing that encloses the watches movement.
Chronograph:
A watch with two independent time systems: One indicates the time of day and the other the intervals of time.
Chronometer:
The highest certification for any watch. Set by the Swiss Official Chronometer
Control(C.O.S.C.). Movement undergoes a series of detailed tests.
Clasp:
The attachment used to connect the two ends of the timepiece bracelet.
Crown:
Known as the "adjustment knob," the crown sets the time and date of a watch.
Crystal:
The glass that you look through to view the dial. There are three types of dials used for watches. Acrylic, which is a plastic. Mineral, is a heat treated process that creates a
Solid to resist scratches. Sapphire crystal is found in your higher-end watches and is more
Expensive.
Deployment Buckle:
A three-folding enclosure that secures the two ends of the bracelet.
Dial:
The flat surface behind the crystal that displays the time.
Digital:
Display of time through LED.
Finishes:
Three types. Brushed, has a flat look with no glare. Polished, which is
Shinny and glossy. Gold plated, layer of gold applied to stainless steel.
Luminous:
Substance applied to most hands of watches. A coating which will illuminate in darkness so you are able to tell the time. Light charges the luminous to glow.
Mechanical Movement:
A watch's mechanism that is powered by manual activity.
Moon Phase:
An indicator that keeps track of the phases of the moon. A normal rotation of the
Is once around the earth every 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes.
Mother of Pearl:
Iridescent milky interior shell of the freshwater mollusk that is sliced thin and used
on watch dials. Most have a milky white appearance. Mother of pearl can be an array of colors.
Movement:
The inner mechanism of a watch that keeps time and moves the watch's hands, calendar, etc. Movements can be either mechanical or quartz.
Perpetual:
A type of calendar that automatically adjusts for months or different lengths and indicates February 29th in each leap year.
Power Reserve Indicator:
This feature is a independent dial on the face of a watch. Shows the strength of the movement.
Quartz Movement:
A movement powered by a quartz crystal. Quartz crystals are know to be very accurate. Requires a battery to operate.
Rotating Bezel:
A bezel that can be turned.
Rotor:
The part of an automatic mechanical watch that winds the movement's mainspring.
Second Time Zone:
An additional dial that can be set to another time zone.
Strap:
A watch band made of leather or fabric.
Sub-dial:
A smaller dial on a watch face used for any of the following purposes, such as hours on a chronograph, indicating the date or even keeping track of elapsed minutes in hours.
Tachometer:
Common feature in chronograph watches. Measures the speed over a predefined distance. The user starts the chronograph when passing the starting point and stops it when passing the finishing point. The user can read the speed in units per hour off the tachometer scale.
Tonneau Case:
A case with a barrel shape with two convex sides.
Unidirectional Turning Bezel:
A bezel that turns in only one direction(anti-clockwise).
Water Resistance:
The ability to withstand splashes of water. Terms such as "water resistant to 50 meters" or "water resistant to 10000 meters" indicate that the watch can be worn underwater to various depths.
World Timers:
A watch with a dial that indicates up to 24 time zones around the world, usually found on the outer edge of the face or on the bezel. Time zones around the world are indicated by major cities.
